So I watched this in its entirety tonight, and I have to say, although I don't know of any other documentary on the MMO subculture out there, this one was extremely extremely well done. I personally don't think they could have done a better job of presenting the "real" MMO environment than they did. The one thing that I have come to realize after playing MMOs for the past 10 years is that it is totally unpredicatble. I am still amazed by statistics I see while reading articles (and in the movie). It is an evershifting and everchanging group of people and I think that the movie presents it that way also.
Below is a few of my thoughts on the actual movie (SPOILERS?)
I thought the guy from Philly (Dan) was full of shit at the beginning of the movie and just looking for something to put the blame on, but he was by far my favorite person at the end of the movie. He really really sums up what I personally believe about MMO's very well: It is up to the person playing to know if they are playing way to much, and it is their OWN willpower that will come to understand what the consequences are for playing too much. I really really ended up liking him a lot by the end of the movie.
Cool opinions by Ed Castronova, Scott Hartsman, Guild Leader of The Syndicate and a bunch of other industry peeps.
The three guys living together (Andrew, Matt?, etc) reminded me of Myself, Val and Rot in college (although we were never that hardcore).
I don't think it presented MMOs in a bad or good light. It just presented them, which is how it should be.
All in all a great film that I think every MMO player should see.
