I'd be retarded (which my wife actually calls me sometimes, so don't count it out) if I didn't mention Sony Online Enterntainment with the PSP. I really don't see the DS carrying any weight in the MMO realm and with SOE having a married relationship with the PSP family, I think that would be the most efficient partnership. I am sure there's probably something in the works. The foundation is already there with the "Champions of Norrath" saga and the support is in the hardware.

That's my thought....

That would be great. I bet some of the larger screen phones could pull it off or even a dedicated original device would be cool. Think about it an MMO you could pick up and play anytime/anywhere. We have the technology to do something like that, but to really be successful I'd think they would need a big name behind it.

Think of all the people who don't have time to play MMOs and would be able to while they are sitting in a doctor's office, on a long car ride, or even sitting at a park. In my opinion it would have be a less involved game, more casual, or at least have a wide variety of short quick things you can do (for example crafting, questing gathering) ... you know how many times I was sitting somewhere wishing I was home working on something in EQ2, I bet there would be a big market for this. Also for those that don't upgrade their machine as often as they would like, there would be no worry about PC requirements.

Doh, I must be retarded then, I thought we were talking about a handheld gaming system like the PSP, DS...

Well none of the handheld systems support direct internet that I know of. In my opinion, finding an access point would just make it a pain in the ass for the DS/PSP, but possible. Cellular internet would be the way to go here since there is already coverage practically everywhere.

Would take alot of backend work, but I don't see it impossible to upgrade the firmware to a 3G networks receivable signal. Would need to be some sort of wireless plan needed, either built into a seperate plan, or in the gaming subscription costs. But if you bring 3G to the PSP, and you make that thing a true wireless PC+ handheld device, that's innovation baby!

Yea thinking about it there would have to be a separate subscription fee... thats why I originally said the iphone. Everyone is already paying for internet, and considering most phones are 3G devices now, why would you want to pay for another internet service.

As for the PSP, if I understand everything correctly it would need a separate piece of hardware to connect to the cellular network. Something that screws into the USB-mini port in the top like the GPS add-on...

Could also be used as a portable web browser. Something like that may work, but I don't see Sony putting that much money into the PSP at the moment. It is the #1 hacked game system and even though all of my friends have a PSP, I don't anyone who has paid for a game for it in years.
