ie: Would you be more hesitant to start a new MMO because you feel that it is harder for a company to survive at this point and you don't want to invest time in a game that might not be around in a year.

Its not a factor for me. The main thing though stopping me from starting new MMO's is a lack of a compelling storyline, the game play might be good and the graphics great but if I don't care about it then I just know I'll lose interest before long.
I think that is a strength of WoW since they gave the world a good history to it with the lore and the is a overall storyline they advance with the quests and raids, EQ2 kind of has it (the Frogloks are brilliantly done) but either bits are not explained so well or its missing in some areas (although only just entering to the later levels here.

I think it's not much of a factor - MMOs fail so often for reasons other than whether or not the company behind them is surviving. When it comes to starting to invest that time in a new MMO you have to do it with the knowledge that it could all go away in a years time.
