Not sure how reliable, but that would be a MAJOR purchase entry into the gaming market. The only thing that bothers me is that any company they purchases usually doesn't create for awhile, it just kinda "lingers" till it gets "Googly" (ie Feedburner, YouTube, etc). They don't seem to really break any new ground after they are acquired.

Valleywag went with it... So it must be true :-)

But really it wouldn't surprise me that google would do that.

Google’s rumored acquisition of game delivery network Valve — and it is, at this point, just a rumor — would give the search giant a robust platform for delivering, updating and charging for digital content. If true, it’s a smart move for Google, and one that should make content delivery firms nervous. It’s also a volley in the war between centralized and distributed computing.

Paying for games with advertising is a growing business. Sites like Kongregate share ad revenue with casual game developers, and ad networks like NeoEdge have seen strong growth from their focus on casual gaming. Valve has delivered some of the most popular games in recent history (for an overview of the Valve network’s distribution and size, check out the piece we wrote back in April.) Acquiring Valve, which has recently added social network features to its distribution client, would help Google get a stronger foothold in this space.

Good read on the "supposed" deal:

I contacted Valve pr man Doug Lombardi who replied to my request for comment on this news with just two words: “complete fabrication.”

Just to make sure Lombardi wasn’t being cagey, I asked if it’s be correct if we posted that (my words) “Valve says Google isn’t buying the company.” He said that would be correct. So… no sale!

Still... i bet google looking for a game studio to buy. Most likely not a full fledged one. But since there working on a virtual world, and if it works out, it would be a good investment for them.
