NDA is lifted. WOOOT!

So what does everyone want to talk about :)

I am absolutely loving WAR. From Public Quests, to the great RvR to the variance of classes.

This game is going to be #3 by Thanksgiving, and I would say #2 by Xmas.

Here are some shots of an awesome battle Theo and I were in a few nights ago. Literally 200+ people in this battle (running smooth) that "virtually" was about the same space as the docks at Thundering Stepps:

War is awesome. They finally got what we've been wanting in PvP MMO's for 10 years. Not to mention a really awesome PVE game. One thing that is really fun in PVE are public quests. When you walk into certain areas you will get a little popup on your screen that says a public quest is going on, these are usually 3-4 part quests that are made to be done by 5-15 people. You can jump in at any time and participate, don't have to be grouped you just start helping, then at the end there is a roll for loot that is skewed towards the people that did the most on the quest. There are usually about 6-8 pieces of loot, they are all decent, #1 on the roll gets to pick first then on down the line. It's neat though because you can hop in on a quest at the very end and still possibly get some loot.

Public quests are one of the most innovative and fun aspects of the PvE game - awesome fun. Another very nice aspect of grouping/raiding is that unless you as leader deem it private it is absolutely open to the public.

I can walk into a new area and get a pop up - "4 open groups in your area" - pick one and join in the fun.

With RvR this feature is essential - enter on overland RvR contest and just hop in a 24 party warband.

Cheers for the pictures, at first sight it looks like WaR is better graphically then WoW, actually very similar to Guildwars. With everything maxed out I prefer EQ2 though, although I'd have to see a lot more screenshots to say for sure.

A few questions I've been itching to ask here!

1) Healing - how powerful is it? Could you for example keep yourself alive while someone else was focusing all their damage on you? (Or could you do the same
for an ally?).

2) Levelling - I know beta levelling speeds change, but was levelling up a slow process like EQ2/WoW or is it a fast side game to the PvP more like guildwars (where you took about 30 big missions to hit level 20 in the first game, but in the expansions could level up in about 4 hours).

3) PvP vs PVE, is there any sort of split in the game? Or does everything work the same in PvP as in PvE (e.g. in WoW stuns etc have different lengths for PVE and PvP)

4) Are there a lot of stuns and incapacitating/rooting effects in the game? And are they a big part of PvP combat? I know WoW has certain classes that thrive on this stunning you from 100-0% health, whereas say in Guildwars there are very few to temporarily incapacitate the opponent with the gameplay being more attack, defend and counterattack/interrupt at a fast pace.

5) And what is the death penalty? (thinking back to the discussions in the 11th EQ2 podcast)

I think I'm gonna have to play this game! I've been doing AoC and honestly... I think they have pissed me off for the last time.

The screen shots and the ui remind me off eq2, wow and vanguard all-in-one. How is crafting?

I would say on par with EQ2 it seems (from a non-healer playing perspective)

2) Levelling - I know beta levelling speeds change, but was levelling up a slow process like EQ2/WoW or is it a fast side game to the PvP more like guildwars (where you took about 30 big missions to hit level 20 in the first game, but in the expansions could level up in about 4 hours).

I actually feel like it takes longer than either EQ2 or WoW...there is a decent amount of time spent running around when you are questing. Plus you get sucked into PvP content which doesn't give much xp :)

3) PvP vs PVE, is there any sort of split in the game? Or does everything work the same in PvP as in PvE (e.g. in WoW stuns etc have different lengths for PVE and PvP)

There is a lot of split, but there is always pvp nearby. In big overland zones (which are huge) there is an area within that is contested. Basically a wasteland with no npc's with 4-6 contested spots for people to fight over control. You are flagged for PVP once you go in and can be attacked by others. There are also PVP instanced zones, which you click on an icon to enter the que for and it zones you in automatically when a new match starts. These are basically PVP playgrounds with controllable points. The team with the longest time controlling the points wins the match. Usually you play until best out of 3 or 5.

I haven't seen them be a large part of PVP, though I have only played at lower levels. Most are pretty short.

5) And what is the death penalty? (thinking back to the discussions in the 11th EQ2 podcast)

Well you get a small debuff in stats after you die, it revives you at the nearest revive point. Very much reminded me of WoW's system.

Looks like Brent @ VW isn't diggin' it:

Quote:
"Having taken part in the variety of game play modes that Warhammer Online offers, I can say with complete confidence that this game might as well have been released 4 years ago as it offers us nothing aside from one standout evolutionary concept, the public quest, that moves the genre forward. "

esssssssh.

I posted that the above comment was full of fail. I really think that WAR not only got a lot of stuff right, but also does have some very interesting ( new concepts for MMOs - PQs, Tome of Knowledge, multiple paths to higher levels, city sacking, siege warfare redux, etc). Each person's definetion of "evolutionary" is unique, but hell even just getting everything right on the pvp side.

I would have to say crafting might be the low point of the game, it isn't al that intricate. There are I think 6? total crafting classes, these are divided into 50% gathering and 50% "creating" classes (not sure why they don't allow one of each). But basically each mob type drops certain items (that always seem to be apothicary items in the end) and only certain gathering classes can get them (Butcher - Meats) / Scavenger - Items etc. These combine with the skills of the creating classes and can create potions/oils (apothicary) and plants (Gardening) and other stuff for the other one (forget what it is). I will try to get up a detailed analysis tonight when I have some time. But in short, it is really just "meh". Each Chapter 2 camp has all the crafting leaders in it so you can choose/switch etc then.

Certainly the area I would think they would look to improve on.

Crafting really is only important for games that are dependent on gear, you need consumables or if you need furniture for player housing. Is WAR any of these? TBH... If there is plenty of pvp, I could care less about crafting unless I need it to be competitive in pvp (like EQ2).

Well we've seen games do complete rehauls in crafting in the middle of it's life cycle and succeed. I don't think alot of weight should be laid on the crafting arena, it can be tweaked.

You guys really seem pumped about it. I am glad to see it. I'll be on the sidelines at launch, but staring in from a distance. How's the system specs on it? Is it going to require a high end gaming rig?

I don;t think so. It isn't in the AOC/EQ2 Realm with its need for a great system. I would say a little more than WOW though. I think most MMO rigs would be sufficient. I can tell I get a drop in Framerate when they introduced Lighting, but the last patch to 3.3 REALLY upgraded the game's graphics as a whole for me, it looks great and is a good mix of styles.

yeah 64 cores is nothing to shy at :)

The funny thing is that Everquest 2 would run just the same as it does now on my system at home.

What a shame.

Unfortunately they aren't showing up here, I wonder if you need the beta access for the links to work?
