I am curious. What is the reaction from the EQ2 players to this expansion. Are most excited or hohum about this?
I think they are heading in a good direction - implementing things asked for since launch like guild halls and a LDON type system. I just fear as Cyan said regarding opening up PvP factions to all classes - its all perhaps a year too late. But we'll see.

Everyone is making the comparison to LDON, but I havent seen or heard any actual information to say that the dungeons are going to be that LDON-like instance-ish type dungeon. All I have heard is about 20+ new zones with some old favs like Najena, Guk etc. Does anyone have any information about why the expansion will be LDON like?

Does anyone have any information about why the expansion will be LDON like? From massively article here - http://www.massively.com/2008/08/15/exploring-the-shadow-odyssey-with-eqii-senior-producer-bruce-fer/Quote:The first thing that comes to mind when hearing about these dungeons is the Lost Dungeons of Norrath expansion from the original EverQuest. For fans of that expansion, will they be seeing similarities here?
Bruce: There was some discussion about that but we didn't really feel like we were doing a copy of the Lost Dungeons of Norrath. There are some aspects that are similar, but it feels very different in the newer game than it did in EverQuest. There are lots of dungeons in it, but the experience is very different. Quote:It sounds like the Shard system for equipment upgrades is also getting a lot of work. Can you explain what you've been doing there?
Bruce: We're really excited about the Shard system, because it will give players the opportunity to get the rewards they want. They'll be able to reward themselves. They can get the stuff that they want rather than "well, this mob drops this item one out of a million times and I have to go raid it or kill it or camp it a million times before I can get the item I want." We're really excited about the ability for players to pick up points, shards, by completing objectives in the expansion. They can spend those points at a merchant and get the item they want rather than something random that they might not really need.
We're going to use the same system to reward players who want to take part in what is basically a daily quest system. Players will get the shards both through these dailies and through adventuring in the dungeons.

Very similar to LDON. Well this is nice I must say,
I wonder if all the dungeons will be like that or just a subset.

sorry went to bed after that post.. well more like passed out. It is from the eq2 dev blog http://eq2dev.wordpress.com/2008/08/16/fan-faire-and-the-shadow-odyssey/Quote: Not so much into the Adventuring side, but fascinated by Tradeskilling? We’re going to be introducing several new Tradeskill dungeons, and provide a raid like experience for you, where you’ll group together to complete a goal of crafting in order to earn faction and purchase recipes.
We’re going to start talking about all of these things in tomorrow’s panels, so if you’re here at Fan Faire, start writing down your questions, and we’ll try to answer them to the best of our ability.

I think group tradeskill events are a great idea. I actually might start playing around with crafting... if I am working with people, maybe it won't bore me to death.

If it's the same concept as LDON was, I'll probably come on back in for a bit and check it out after release. I would say the #1 thing I loved most about EQ1 was the LDON expansion. I had such a blast playing those little 30min-1hr zones and gaining points to spend at the adventure merchants on augs and items, and some spells.
Seeing everyone around one centralized area was great. Could sit around and find a group immediately, got to hang out, BS, and see people. I think that was the best part of LDON was the push for groups.
Hopefully this is what this is all about.

I think they are heading in a good direction - implementing things asked for since launch like guild halls and a LDON type system. I just fear as Cyan said regarding opening up PvP factions to all classes - its all perhaps a year too late. But we'll see. I've never heard of LDON but the changes all look very similar to the WoW badge of justice system which allowed players initially to get pre-raid gear and then later on to get gear that allowed them to skip obsolete raid instances as the storyline moved on. Personally I think its a great system and it was the main motivator for getting people to group up and run dungeons, if they are implementing something like it then it'll be perfect for levelling the playfield with raiding and allowing new people to start up without needing another level jump to even things out again. All in all I'm liking what I'm seeing with the new EQ2 expansion, it just seems to be improving the quality of what's there rather then producing more of the same, while the expansion storyline (what little I've read) sounds very self contained and easy to know what's going on I would say though that the whole world storyline in EQ2 is something that could do with improving. Having some live events and tying more of the quests into the lore would be something I'd like to see myself, I think that's something WoW has done well with the player having a clear idea of what's going on when they get into a zone (although since I've only been up to the level 30 zones I may just not have seen enough yet). As for the PvP though, I see they have tinkered with it again, but personally I think anything short of opening up realm vs realm battlegrounds where you can queue (and wander off and tradeskill/harvest/quest/whatever) and zone into will fail since the population that wants to PvP is scattered over so many servers (especially when the PvP didn't appear at game launch and isn't even listed as a recommended server for non-US players).

Unfortunately, I don't see that many resources being thrown into EQ2 PvP. Its pretty much a dead horse. Although I will say from the PvE aspects (and LDON-ish ness) it does look like a great expansion. I do have to say though I am getting sick of the old nostalgia. I won't comment about the storyline till I see it (I mean bringing back a "classic" god (Anashti Sul) does pike my interest though). I think the lore needs more elements that are either ancient (before Eq1) or just all together new.

I was browsing EB's web site and came across the new EQ2 expansion... it mentions a free mount and shows a pic. I did not see this on any of the eq2 sites, thought it was neat. http://www.ebgames.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=72499#Specifications
