I can't seem to figure out what it is, but I can't log in to a MMO right now and spend more than an hour or two without saying to myself "Hmm, I'd rather be doing something else..." What's the deal? I have played pretty much every MMO since UO and have max level characters in just about every modern major AAA title. I'm just bored and the whole genre isn't firing me up atm. I used to be able to play for 6-7 hours straight almost every night.
Anyone else going through a "burn out" phase? Any suggestions for getting motivated to play again? Very strange. I'm hoping Conan will motivate me but that's still a few months away at best. Xbox is pretty cool but even that doesn't wow me like the MMOs used to do. It's a strange feeling to sit down at your PC and be bored.

Totally feel you guys on this one. I haven't logged into EQ2 in about a month or so, I am playing WoW nightly but my sessions end up being about 30-45 mins a piece though (which is nice). I have a lot of coding I am working on that is keeping me busy though so I am not bored per se, but the MMO burnout definitely hit me around Xmas and has been filled by maybe 30 min sessions of an array of x360 games and Wow.
I think when it really hit me personally was when i picked up Rock Band. For some reason after playing it with the wife anf friends for a good two weeks I kinda came to the conclusion that I have waaaaaay more social interaction with that game (even just playing online with other people and no one else in the room) than I do in a Massively Multiplayer Online world. I think that one of the reasons I used to grind so hard in MMOs was for the social aspect, but now I think Xbox live (and probably the other consoles) are really making headway into social gaming and with all the peripherals available and completely different styles of gameplay than normal comp games, for me personally, they are honestly just more fun.
To be honest it has been kinda hard for me with this site also. I love this community and I love talking on these forums, but is seems more and more of my topics are being posted in "Off Topic" rather than General EQ2 stuff. I kinda wish this site was more of a general gaming site rather than eq2 specific right now, but I don't want to change anything after I got everything all redone for the last revision, and I want to make sure I keep this community in tact cause I love talking shit with all you guys about games.

I feel you as well. I have been filling the void with some FPS play, but I have definately lost my drive somewhat for MMO's. I have talked to a few that feel the same way. For me that tends to happen sometimes but it will usually only last a couple of months. Though there was a time back in my EQ1 days I took a whole year off, just to eventually jump back in and play more vigorously than ever before. Hopefully this is not one of those times.

Totally with you on this one. I think maybe Rise of Kunark has something to do with it. A few of my guildmates are also taking a break from EQ2 and we have started to play a bit of Lord of the Rings.
For me personally, RoK feels a bit rushed, quests have been quite grindy with no real challenge ( I won't mention my templar!) and I have been getting some amazing quest rewards that has made the feeling of working for some decent armour/weapons less rewarding. i have never had so much +dmg gear outside an instance, but with RoK, do a couple of quests and you are getting gear that is far better than some of the EoF instance stuff.
I still think EQ2 is one of the best MMO's and I am sure I will play again, but I have been enjoying FPS, LOTRO and a couple of other single player games (and my new nintendo DS) since my break.

Agree with all the sentiments here. It was also around Christmas with me that this burnout happened. In all honesty this must have something to do with RoK - I can't put my finger on it but this expansion had me burned out quickly. Not so with the previous ones.

Because of the nature of MMOs players tend to play them in large batches of time. It is impossible for devs to make enough gameplay elements to satisfy people who play 40+ hours per week. As such, MMOs have grind elements to slow players down.
I suspect the lack of motivation is because of a lack of fun. The lack of fun might have been temporarily subdued by RoK because of the new eye candy and new zones. After those wore off, it was back to grind. Grind isn't fun.
Perhaps it is time to dust off the old PS2 and get into some fun games with strong roleplay elements. Because the games are single player and have a beginning, middle, and end, the game devs can focus on content and gameplay.
I suggest games like Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Mark of the Kri, Rise of the Kasia, your favorite FF game, etc.
I'm not sure I'll ever play a MMO again. I feel so complete when I finish a RPG - like after a good movie or a good book - I never felt that way in EQ2. I never had that sense that the story was over and I could move on.

i don't know i feel different. I'm enjoying mmo more than before, i've even started to branch out and try other MMOs. (didn't like vanguard). But in eq2 i've actually enjoyed it a lot more than before. It might be that i started playing MMO's later than the rest of you, and not at the burn out the rest of you have.

RoK has - imho - been a disaster. The emphasis on solo play has fractured the community big style. The reasoning that SOE gave was that players were soloing a lot, so they put in a lot of solo content. That may be true - but it's a shoddy analysis. Players play in different ways. I enjoyed soloing - a lot - but I also really liked to get sucked into groups whether for grind or for quest completion. If the right PUG came along, and everyone played nice and got along, it was a blast and a nice surprise.
With solo content there is no nice surprise. You know exactly what you're going to get. The "added value" of EQ2 being an mmo, where you can log on for an evening and end up doing something totally different to what you had planned, has vanished.
There is some group content, obviously, but with so much solo content about, there aren't many people available for a random group, so the culture of grouping in guild or outside breaks down. Players are running from the game in droves. They may still have subs, but they aren't playing. 3 months ago, folks in my guild were screaming to get a spot in a raid; now we're struggling to fill them.
As for MMO's in general, it's hard to move to another game. Most of them just aren't as good. LOTRO is pretty but lacks depth. EO is a newb's nightmare. EQ is a newbs nightmare with horrid graphics. SWG is a ghost town. And there's wow... EQ2 is still the best - but when they're breaking the best MMO, it's consoles etc ftw. Loving my Nintendo DS right now :)

I dropped my fucking PSP this afternoon and the screen cracked. I'm not a happy mofo right now. Though so I don't have any negative feelings, I will run out right after work to get a new one.

Been playing consoles almost exclusively for past several weeks.
Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Guitar Hero, and Mario have each dominated my attention - most especially CoD4 - the multiplayer on 360 is implemented fantastically.

Very rare does a night go by where I don't have an instance group or somthing to help out the lowbies with. We even RAID once or twice a week (any more then that would be too much for me anyways) I HATED the RoK solo stuff at first, but it forced me to learn how to better solo a Fury (btw the animal charm and Mez AA is GREAT!) and I am having alot of fun with it, not to mention the loot, XP, and AA I am getting from the quests. Do I think they could have done a better job with RoK... Yes but its not too bad once you get used to it and it does take alot of getting used too.

I am status quo. Still playing daily and raiding a few times a week. I concur this expansion takes some getting used to. It is alot better now than when it lauched though. Instance groups are more common like what you had with EoF (ie MMC, CM, OOB, etc) now than at lauch. So when I log in its with a goal of doing a quest or two solo and then finding a group or going to pvp. A really poor analogy and I hasitate to make it is this: RoK is like reading the "Lord of the Rings". Book 1 was slow but by the two towers your mezzed. I just hope that RoK finishes as strong as reading the witch kings demise for the first time. :)

I think the problem with RoK is that a lot of classes (guardians, defilers, troubies) are less fun to solo than others (furies, necros, zerkers). I like solo questing, but the sheer unremitting volume of it made it a real grind for me. And having levelled a couple of alts to 73, the replayability sucks.

and thats a big kicker for me personally. I have all my slots filled with characters, and even redoing the Sinking Sands/court favor lines with my alts got kinda boring at some points. I CAN NOT Imagine going back through the 70-72 solo quests with an alt, and unfortunately until another expansion those might be my only choices at that level unless I just want to grind.
