Old  New  Interesting thing is this actually creates an entire avatar instead of just the portrait. That means they are getting very close to walking in stations :D

The original doesn't look too shabby to me, but the new graphics are extremely impressive, especially the attention to detail with the non-symmetrical hair on the face (I'm guessing they are the hair/fur shaders that EQ2's Imago-Quem (Chris Ryan) was talking about), and expression (I wonder what sort of skeletal structure is underneath it?).
I'm just intruged now how they all animate now since there is a whole avatar, especially what sort of load they put on the GPU, if Eve can put this sort of detail in a large user enviroment I think the days of the graphical standard for new MMO's being crudely drawn cartoons will (hopefully!) be coming to a end!

During the creation process you can click on a part of the face and this highlights the underlying muscle structure. Then you can pull/bend those muscles to make changes. It is pretty powerful. Two quick examples:
