Gear Prgression in SF Options

Came across this blog entry on the news page. The gear progression has puzzled me since release of SF and this guy echos my sentiments almost exactly.

Can anyone detail for me how it works? For instance, I did not realize some legendary pieces are instance drop only while some are mark only.

I also do not understand how they upgrade. I have heard in my guild's vent channel comments like "and that piece is upgradeable" and similar. I do not have a clue what they are talking about.

What was wrong with solo mobs and quests for treasured, group instances for legendary, and raids for fabled? I remember being so excited for the shard system - it at least is far more linearly simple.

Do you just get the marks from instances and quest?
