I've just spotted this bit of news in the forums from Rothgar Quote:Server population is going to be a hot issue for us after the expansion. We need to see how population shakes out after the expansion launches. We also have some hardware upgrades in the works for several servers. We will be evaluating several options such as transfers, server merges, etc. We understand this is a concern and I just wanted to let you know that its on our radar for the near future.
Some of the options might require hardware upgrades so please understand that these things can't be done overnight. Hang in there, help is on the way! I'm wondering what this all means, while normally server mergers always equals declining populations and I'm guessing the delay for SF has quietened things off a bit more then usual, the fact he mentions hardware upgrades for several servers I assume this would cover AB and Nagafen, but other then that I'm not sure if I know of any other servers suffering high population issues that would benefit from a hardware upgrade? For this reason I'm wondering if the population issues are more to do with improving the technology of the servers to handle more people then declining populations? If the populations were fairly flat for a long period of time it would make sense to over time run with fewer and fewer servers as they are upgraded with better technology.

If I had to guess, I'd suspect they're looking at reducing their server count by upgrading some of them to handle bigger populations, and then merging the rest into them. It makes a lot of sense from a server management point of view; I'm not sure whether EQ2 players are as attached to their servers as we were in EQ1. We were pretty pissed when they merged another server into Prexus, and we even got to keep the server name - I'm not sure I'd care whether they merged Permafrost with a dozen other servers. There's simply not the server-oriented community feel in EQ2. <derail off>

they are extremely top heavy with their server populations atm. They are looking to even it out some. Read somewhere that they upgrades to Nagafen prior to merge were a big success.

The troub end line ability is sweet. Extends CA and spell range. Melee autoattack range +20% and Ranged autoattack +10%. That is a slick buff.
edit - oops, meant for this to be in SF aa thread :)

Just a little bit more news that I've seen on the EQ2 forums RothgarQuote: I can answer your question with an emphatic "no". We have not lost any hardware to other games, in fact it's quite the opposite. Some of the new hardware we are using for battlegrounds is coming from other games that have downsized recently.
You can rest assured our hamsters aren't going anywhere.
Now I wonder what games are being downsized here, there have been servers removed from Planetside and the Matrix recently I know of. I'd still like to know what they have for servers and if they are constantly upgraded or if a server released in 2004 really is a 6 year old computer today, not sure if these are commercial secrets though.
