http://www.eveonline.com/devblog.asp?a=blog&bid=691Quote:Who makes sure all those stargates in 0.0 continue to run? Who pays the bills to the crews and funds essential services to ensure there are no breakdowns? When Dominion is released, the answer is simple - if you want to control the space accessed by these stargates, you will be responsible for their monthly maintenance and upkeep. The current design calls for this to be a simple ISK transaction, representative of things like duct tape for reactor maintenance, Amarrios breakfast cereal and other important stuff.
The other major factor is the more space you spread your ‘Dominion' across, the more expensive it will become to maintain your stargate network. 0.0 space in Eve is full on pvp. If your corporation wants to lay claim to an area of no security space then it will be forced to pay for the upkeep of said space. Imagine if in EQ2 a guild could 'control' an area of Norrath but in exchange they had to pay all the NPC salaries in that area. Now that could be a plat sink.

That idea does sound cool and makes the makes the world feel a bit more alive with consequences.
I'm wondering if this concept could be taken a step further in a EQ3 and make it so you can pay for NPC's varying amounts to hold an area, the more you pay the more loyal they are.
Then allow the option for other groups to outbid you/treachery, this would give meaning to the whole broker system and money in general as another source of power, add in alignment and the racial animosities (E.g. Froglok vs Troll) and there could be a whole new level of diplomacy and trade to the game, a guilds mercantile power could then be just as important as its physical PVP power (and even the race you pick could make a big influence on things).
The downside is giving Plat extra value, which encourages the farmers, so maybe the system above would have to rely on some sort of status tied to the individual, it would be cool if the next EQ went in that sort of direction though.

Overall I think the ideas would great in both EVE and EQ3. It owuld probably take some tinerking, I could also see server disparity, 1 plat on server x isn't equal to 1 plat on server y, etc. Eve doesn't really have to worry about that. Or if they are selling their own plat ;)
