Ok this one is cryptic, but is Smedley toying with us or is the greatest FPSMMO ever going to get a facelift?

Smedley Twitter

Just been playing this the past couple of weeks, and after some flailing around it finally gripped me, the last weekend especially I was there all day everyday just enjoying myself, win, lose, or draw.

If I remember when I head home next I'll have to post some screenshots but defending a base with corridor fighting for 1 1/2 hours was manic, no other MMO I've seen has managed to get ~50+ a side people in the same area (I'm talking about my local map area here!) lag free, as far as PVP goes this one gets the vote from me for the massive part, as a Sci-fi buff too I just love the setting.

Help Us Design the Next PlanetSide Game

That's right, you heard what we said! We plan to expand the PlanetSide universe with another game and we need your help with the design. After all, who knows the game better than you, our customers, the people who actually play it! Don't worry about the original PlanetSide, it isn't going anywhere.

We want to hear your opinion and to do so we have put together a short survey. The information you provide will play a critical role into helping guide the development and direction of the next hit Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter. As a loyal player and experienced shooter fan, we value your input and look forward to hearing what you have to say.

YES!

Same feeling here, its Planetside 2 then, now I'm more then curious as to know what they plan here, but as usual when I get to a survey I find it hard to really say what the key feature that needs improving is, so far they're asking

Rate your satisfaction level with these PlanetSide features:

Quote:
Game mechanics Very Unsatisfied Unsatisfied Neutral Satisfied Very Satisfied
Story development
Character progression
Character art
Zone art
Itemization/weapons
Character classes
Faction variety
Exploration

Quote:
Pick three of the most important elements of PlanetSide that you like to see improved from:

Game Mechanics
Story Development
Character progression
Character Art
Zone Art
Itemization weapons
Variety of Air and Ground vehicles
Character classes/certifications/roles
Faction variety
Introduction of AI
Exploration
Anti hacking detection
System performance

For me, the weakest part about Planetside is actually the 3D shooter it has, there is no laying down, no leaning around corners, aiming doesn't feel as skilful or satisfying as say Day of defeat: Source, explosives go off but bodies don't fly around with those satisfying rag doll physics.

After that I'm sort of struggling, the graphics can be improved but at the same time I think its one of the most polished games around there since there is so little apart from some duff audio that stands out for me as being wrong, well maybe story development, it seems like they chopped and changed that as they wanted for the game.

So I went 1st=Game mechanics, 2nd=variety of air and ground vehicles 3rd=Anti hacking detection

I was struggling though with Itemization weapons being in the third position, I've not suffered from a game being ruined by a hacker, but they are certainly on there every day.

The next page though shows some insight into what they are thinking of here

Quote:
Which features should a potential new PlanetSide game focus on to make the overall play experience better for you?

Rank in order of importance (1 = Most Important, 16 = Least Important)

Variety of terrain and zone types
Supporting role class/archetypes
Weapon diversity, uniqueness and power
Ground and air-based vehicle diversity, uniqueness and power
Character and weapon customization
Group mechanics and abilities
Exploration and navigation
Combat targeting system
Achievements
Player stats
Squad and outfit
Meta game objectives
Melee combat
Water-based vehicle combat
Land-based vehicle combat
Air-based vehicle combat

Melee combat? Water based vehicle combat, now that would be very interesting twist to things, thinking here of Terminator marines in Warhammer 40k with their energy melee weapons, player stats is also something different here.

This question does show though how far off the game probably is, I think we can assume the art hasn't been developed yet at least

Quote:
What would be the ideal setting for this game?
Sci-fi with futuristic weapons
In the near future with a modern day setting and a twist of technology that creates weapons not possible in 2009
Modern day militaristic battles with today’s military weaponry
Historical setting with weapons of the past
Post apocalyptic world

Sci-fi surely all the way? Just imagine the howls of anguish though if they developed a historical Planetside with muskets :)

There are questions there relating to free to play etc and a few more on gameplay, as long as there is a monthly option though I don't really mind since I hate thinking about how much its costing while playing.

Just a quick thing to add, the site www.planetside2.com has just been told by SOE very nicely with only a small usage of nuclear weaponry to hand it over :)

(Apparently it was up for years with that name, its now another link to planetside).

While I think the EQ2 naming history makes the next game unlikely to be Planetside 2 my bets are on its going to be Planetside 2: Something.

Smed's Blog talks about Planetside 2. I am officially getting pumped about this:

Me too, I've been on a lot over the past few weeks, last night I had my first Black Ops session too which was a blast, everyone hated us :D

One of the guys comments though made me really think on that blog, how can the next Planetside move the game from only battling over Bases, towers and bridges to battling over the entire landscape? I'm thinking here if we could see infantry get dug in, Tanks go hull down etc just for a hill or valley.

Smed's still leaving us hanging here on the details, but everything he's confirmed so far has been exactly what I want to see.

Prediction: Planetside 2 will use a micro-transaction model. You will deposit money into an account to buy items.

If you're looking for a way to sync files between computers I'd suggest Dropbox. It installs easy, runs on a Mac or a PC, and you get 2GB of storage for free. Use this link and you get another 250 MB on top of that!

Agreed, also will have in game advertising for products of today in a futuristic sense. But no monthly fee.

I's go with this, especially if its for the PS3 as they need to break the cost of playing down. But the question I have is, what are they going to sell, Time or Power?
