I've got a 360 that I've had for a long time. Recently, it boots up and then goes all static like on the menu screens. It makes this awful hissing sound through the speakers and the pixels all look weird on the screen. This is typically followed by a system freeze and / or a red ring on the front of the machine. I've heard about the RROD before, but is this pixel break up, freeze and screech consistent with that issue?
I check the cables and everything looks fine. I tried different games and no game and it's giving me the same thing every time. Is it time to just go buy an Elite edition? I know some of you guys are console gurus these days - any ideas?
Thanks,
Laz

Yup sounds like a RROD to me.
Mine didn't make any sounds, but it did do the weird pixelation thing.

I agree - check with Microsoft you might be able to get it fixed - they are covered for 3 years.

I just got the lower right ring on mine tonight. It said E74 as the error code. I restarted my system after I got that message to contact Microsoft support and it is working again. I bought mine in December of 2006 so I am creeping up on my 3 year warranty. I will probably send it in for repair. I have had to restart my system many times due to freezing and pixelation but it always cranks back up again. Its working now but who knows.

I would certainly send in now, in some cases with the older models they will just give you a new mobo and innerds.
