Today MindArk PE AB, operators of the Entropia Universe virtual worlds, announced that the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority had granted MindArk's subsidiary Mind Bank AB a license to conduct legal banking activities. This allows MindArk to operate Mind Bank AB as a fully functioning bank within the Entropia Universe, providing real world banking functions to all virtual worlds running on the Entropia Universe platform. Mind Bank AB will be the first bank that fully incorporates real money transactions with activities within a virtual world.

A quick summary of Entropia Universe. MindArk is the company behind Entropia Universe. They have recently moved to allow their product to be licensed as a platform. So any person or group of people can created their own MMO by licensing Mindark's platform. First Plant Calypso is the spin-off company that is controlling the planet/game that used to be Project Entropia.

In the Entropia Universe players transfer real world dollars into the game in exchange for virtual dollars (PEDs) at a rate of 10 PEDs to 1 U.S. dollar. With these funds players can buy armor, weapons, ammo, mining equipment, etc. Players who profit can withdraw their money if desired.

By opening a real world bank Mindark is facilitating the process of transferring money. In addition, players will be able to secure debit cards. This will allow a person to buy a real world item using their virtual currency.

Interesting stuff indeed.

I can't help but feel that they're going in a different direction then the one I would call fun here, but I am opposed to real money being a central part of any game (I also have visions here of them creating an online experience as equally dull and frustrating as the high street banks ;) ).

Its an interesting development though, whether they end up as a paypal style company that got their first will have to be seen, my suspicion is still no for the European market, I know if EQ2 or WoW moved over to revolving around requiring real money to progress I'd just find a cheaper alternative.

With all that has gone on in the international banking of this past year, I am kinda surprised that they would get the go ahead. But I have to give them props for taking the initiative and moving forward with it. I am going to watch this with interest. It has the chance to be very historical in the finance world in 10 years, or it could end up a massive joke to be laughed at.

Great post, I never would have seen this had it not been posted here.
