SOE Boss: It's 'Ridiculous and Foolish' to Say PC Gaming is in DeclineInteresting stance by Smedley. I've been recently saying that retail PC sales are going to fall off soon. We're in an age that repeats the mistakes of the 80's - too much piracy protection. I mean, if I have to authenticate against a server and enter a code into my game and install the entire game to HDD, why should I have to have the DVD in the drive too? At least Steam and D2D get rid of the whole authentication key/DVD required steps... I know that's the reason that Best Buy has been seeing me less and less as of late. *edit by Cyan - Changed to Link My task is done/My song has ceased/My theme has died into an echo/It is fit.

Actually, he could've said that they would be more pointing toworths console gaming themselves, which he did not. As posted on this thread, some people are apprehensive about the move to SCE, and afraid SOE will retract itself out of the PC gaming world in favour of the PS3.

I believe they already have multiple titles headed towards the PC that he can not discourage at this point. After this move, I have NO doubt Over the next 5 years SOE will move to offer its titles on both PCs and Consoles, and within 10 years could completely cease selling PC games. Regardless of what Smed is saying today. When you have a mover like the PS3 in hardware, you NEED to make up the backend of those hardware sales by licensing, your own games and (now) casual game distribution. That all will happen on the console. It is just too much more easier and they 'were' getting their lunch ate by MS. Things could change in the next 3 years though. I think this move was part of that strategy.

It wasn't necessarily what he said that I was praising him for, but how he said it. Many people view the NPD(?) sales reports as the be all and end all of indications of trends, and I'm sure that a lot of other people than myself are moving away from the B&M purchases to digital distribution. And just by *myself* that's over a $500 hit to Best Buy last year. Frontlines, Orange Box, ROK, UT3, DoW, NWN2, QW:ET, COD4, Civ4, Company of Heroes, Jade Empire, Bioshock, Hitman: Blood Money, Quake 4, GalCiv2: DA, Sins of a Solar Empire... that's just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. Why? Because Digital Distribution is more convenient. No need for a DVD, and I can just re-download any time. At first I was looking at it from the perspective of the fact that they had less of a channel, so they should give money off, and I wasn't buying Digital. But once I started to really pay attention to what digital offered, I went in wholesale. In fact, there are a few games that aren't on any of the services yet and I haven't even bothered to get them because of that... My task is done/My song has ceased/My theme has died into an echo/It is fit.

I think this move was part of that strategy. Actually SOE has been a multi-platform corporation for a while now. They made EQ for the PocketPC, there's EQOA for the PS2, a number of titles for the PSP, and a couple of titles for the PS3 so far. They even tried making EQ for the Mac, but I don't think that ever became real popular. Next to that they have been actively involved in creating the network area on the PS3 itself. So, it's not like they havn't been developping for consoles already, and I could definitely see them working on more products as multi-platform releases. However, I don't think they're currently planning on halting PC production of games, and that is what I read through the lines of that interview. Also it's not like the MMO market is overwhelming on the consoles. I know of a couple of console based MMOs, but I don't believe any got the subscriber base of an average PC based MMO. As such I don't see SOE going the console-only route any time soon. Also, I definitely do agree with what Wraith said there.

Agreed. I guess I like what Smed said in the original article because I agree with it. I'm not leaving PC gaming unless they drag me kicking and screaming.
