Warhammer like EQ2 has four archetypes that break down to 24 classes.
The archetypes are Tank, Melee DPS, Ranged DPS, Healer.
The great news for a pvp game is however that of those four archtypes there are no guardians, templars etc. There are no "pure classes" and they are striving that all archetypes are equally effective in pvp. Basically each archetype will have one of the other three that they are particularly vulnerable against. A nemesis type.
Archetype --> Nemesis
Tank --> Ranged DPS Ranged DPS --> Melee DPS Melee DPS --> Tank
Notice the absence of healer. That is because the different healer classes break down as either melee or ranged dps. A melee DPS healer will have trouble against tanks, ranged DPS healer will struggle against melee DPS.
In a game completely built around PVP having this type balance is necessary and will prevent finding 7/10 classes as one archetype IE EQ2 scouts.

I am really hoping this ads more of a team/Job element to the game (a la BF2/Team Fort etc). Minus DAOC I really don't know of another MMO pvp game that has that. Planetside did to a point, but once you took into account commanders, things got a little murkey, because I think it was planned to elevate just a team (ie 4 man vs 4 man with a commander) helps the latter team a lot. But what ended up happening was that people used commandership to beat people 1 on 1 and they lost a hold of the balance (at least this is the way it was when I originally played for the first year). I think Planetside was able to balance this by vehicles, but Warhammer (minus siege weapons) won't have this, so they are going to TRUELY need to keep the archtypes balanced. I wish the damn NDA was listed so we could ask how good the balance is.
I think DAOC tried to strive for balance also, but there were always some class (Infiltrator/Druid/Warden/Rever) that were always just a little better 1v1 imho.
I am getting pumped the more and more I read about this game.

Here is a good video with archetypes explained. He mentions what each archetype is strongest against and weakest against, good info. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aR5adZptjOYTried to embed it, doing something wrong i guess. *edit Added inline video -Cyan Theo
